It’s no secret electronic items are valuable, but many people don’t realize just how valuable they can be even after they are broken or outdated. You probably have a desktop, laptop, camera, or cell phone you haven’t used in years lying around your house right now. Since electronic devices can’t be thrown away in the regular trash, many families, businesses, and other organizations in your area are probably looking for a place to safely recycle these old devices. It is very possible to make money recycling electronics, but you need to have a plan in place first.

Step 1: Find Storage Space

Most electronic recycling facilities who buy escrap will want to buy it in bulk. This means you won’t get much money if you send them just one or two computers at a time. You will need a space to store the electronic items you accumulate before sending them to the electronics recycler. If you’re lucky, you or someone you know may have a garage or other space you can use. If not, you can always rent a month to month storage space, or even an office or warehouse space depending on how long and often you plan to gather ewaste materials.

Step 2: Accumulate eWaste Materials

Obviously you will need to get as many ewaste materials as you can to recycle. Generally, the more materials you can get, the more money you will make. However, not all electronics items are worth the same amount of money, so you will want to put your efforts into finding high value items (especially those with gold), and avoiding low value items (like those that are mainly plastic). There are even some items, like old CRT monitors, that you will actually have to pay to recycle. You obviously want to avoid those if possible.

You can start by asking friends, family, and neighbors if they have any old electronics they want to get rid of. Then you can expand to calling businesses in your area that may have old electronics they are willing to recycle. Some businesses actually pay to have a company remove their outdated electronics, so they may be happy to give them to you for free if you do the work of removing the items from their property. You may also be able to arrange to sort the items onsite and send them directly to the recycler instead of having to remove them from the property and then sort and ship.

Step 3: Sort Your Items

The value of escrap materials can vary wildly depending on the type of material and how much gold or other precious metal it contains. You will need to know how to properly sort your ewaste so you can make the highest profit from recycling electronics. Sorting materials can be trickier than it sounds because there are many different categories of escrap, all with different values. Do some research beforehand so you know what item belongs in what category and you can give the quantity you have of each category to your electronics recycling sales person. Proper sorting will allow you to get the most accurate valuation of your materials and will avoid unpleasant surprises when it comes time to getting paid.

Step 4: Ship Your Escrap and Make Money

When you have accumulated at least one gaylord of materials, it is time to ship them out. As soon as you are ready, you can contact us with information about what scrap you have and the quantity, and we can get you a quote and discuss payment terms. You will then have to arrange freight shipping to our facility. If you have not worked with a freight company before, we will be happy to help you set this up.
